Olivia's Latest Eye Appointment

Olivia's eye doctor decided to be coherent this week. It was refreshing.
We know she has a vision problem in her left eye and we were following doctor's orders to get her some glasses. This week we had a follow-up to see if the glasses were helping. Her vision problem is called Amblyopia - which means her left eye isn't focusing properly.
There are 2 possible reasons why:
1. The optic glioma located on the optic nerve of her left eye as a result of her NF1. Vision problems due to an optic glioma are permanent.
OR
2. Amblyiopia is a common vision problem for kids that can be corrected with glasses. Another way to help her is by "patching" the eye with good vision (the right one for Olivia), making the eye with lesser vision learn how to see properly. We are supposed to patch her eye for 1 hour, 7 days a week, for 3 months. And hopefully when we go back her vision will have improved, which means it wouldn't have been caused by the optic glioma. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep, that was it. Very straight forward. To the point. I got it this time. Hooray!! Remember my past posts about this? Nonsense 1 and Nonsense 2? Blech.
Now we just have to deal with the actual patching and there have already been many tears shed over this. She lays on the couch with her blanket, whining "I can't see Mom." Slightly amusing in a melodramatic sort of way. But she is doing better each day. The first day the patch stayed on for only about 15 minutes, but today it was 50 minutes. So its looking up.
AND we are potty training. AND she is excited about it again (pop, chips, and chocolate have helped). AND she is staying dry so far. Hip Hip Hooray. Sweet girl is having a busy week.

Oh my heck! Thank goodness you have info now and that will help Olivia--I hope the patch works and helps her left eye get strong. And yay for the potty training--you go "O". What a big girl!
