Weekend! WooHoo!!

We are headed to Idaho Falls tomorrow!! I'm excited for the "vacation." We don't have any plans, but just hanging out for a long weekend with my parents sounds nice. Here are some pictures from our week:

Austin is pushing Nyah out of the picture, but don't be fooled by her shocked face, she was pushing him the minute before.
Jolie vs. Bookshelf-- obviously the bookshelf lost. This is how she entertains herself when we are doing school or I'm busy on the computer.
Olivia loves strollers, but still wasn't very pleased about getting stuck in this one. She was even less pleased about me taking the time to take pictures before helping her out.

Happy Chinese New Year!!

The Year of the Ox--2009

So, in that past we've made the Chinese New Year a big deal, but this year it kind of snuck up on me, so we decided to go to Panda Express for lunch and call it good. Before the kids had even started on their favorite food in the whole world (orange chicken), they wanted to open their fortune cookies. Nyah, being typical Nyah, impatiently opening her cookie, tearing the fortune into three pieces in her great hurry. She puts it down and starts pouting, and asks me to help her. I pull out the broken pieces, line them up on the table, and it takes everything I have to not burst out laughing hysterically. Her fortune says:
HAVE PATIENCE- IT WILL BENEFIT YOU
I think it was just too much for her to hear "Be patient" from a fortune cookie. She burst into tears, and moved over to the next table, where she put her head in her arms and cried good and loud. She only came back to eat lunch when I told her she could have my fortune. I'm still laughing at how perfectly it fit the situation.
Austin's: JUDGE ONE NOT BY HIS CHARMS, BUT BY HIS QUALITIES
Olivia's: IMPORTANT EVENTS ARE IN YOUR FUTURE
Mine/Nyah's: YOU ARE ATTRACTED TO THINGS WITH AN EXOTIC FLAVOR
What's up with fortunes these days? I miss the days of getting a fortune like "YOU WILL HAVE GOOD FORTUNE IN THE FUTURE" or "BEWARE OF THE TALL, DARK STRANGER." Being attracted to things with an exotic flavor? Yeah, I'm at Panda Express eating chinese food, its not a big stretch to imagine being attracted to exotic flavor. Where's the mystery? the intrigue? Olivia's 2!!, of course important events are in her future. Her whole life is ahead of her. And I don't even know what to say about Austin's. Its not a fortune, its advice--Make good friends. And being told to be patient, after hearing it a dozen times a day from your mom for months is just plain wrong.

Picture Honorable Mentions

Jolie was officially introduced to ice cream this week, courtesy of her dad. It was hilarious to watch her hovering around him on the bed with her mouth wide open, like a baby bird waiting for a worm.
Sometimes my kids have moments when they are all contently engaged in an activity and happy to hang out with each other. No complaining about someone stealing crayons or drawing on someone else's picture, just the happy hum of busy-ness. These moments are sooo nice.
Austin and Nyah had a great time being out in the fog and sloshing around in the mud. The fog was so bad this day the airport ended up closed.

P is for Pockets

I love it when kids discover their pockets. Pudgy little hands suddenly with the dexterity to squish themselves into such a small space. Seeing Olivia with her hands in her pockets, watching the rain, makes her look contemplative, just that bit more grown up. And no one would even have to know about the typical toddler tantrum that followed when I wouldn't let her go out and play in the rain and mud.

The Great Outdoors

So our walk was not quite so beautiful this past week. That's the bad part of living in a big city (Salt Lake, Utah)--inversion mucks everything up, and makes it harder to breathe. I think lugging my 2 year old around also helped with that.

Speaking of the toddler, she spent the entire time pointing at the playground barely visible at the end of houses, saying "play."
Highlight of our walk for the kids was the hill they found to slide down on, on their bottoms, into the gully. Where do these guys get all their energy? Once or twice for me and I was worn out!
Another great find was this dead tree. They spent a lot of time climbing in and out of it.
I think these dead woolly mulleins are beautiful! I love how the stand straight up all over the place. It will be fun to see them growing up new in the spring.
Deer tracks are everywhere--even our backyard, which proves what the neighbors have been saying--anything planted will end up food for the wild life.
I thought it was fun to find this tree that is smaller than the toddler.
The kids were excited to find more moss growing on boulders, and made sure I took a picture of it. We may go back and do those challenges so they learn more about it.
And, of course, we ended up our hike at the playground, the toddler's long lost friend. She threw a tantrum all the way home when it was time to leave. She just might stay at home next time.

Chef Nyah

Nyah's turn to cook dinner. She fed us Comet Chicken (mesquite seasoned, and it had to have a cool name like Volvano Chicken), and for side dishes she wanted salad, green beans, and peas--all green on purpose. Plus her favorite side dish, buttered bread. Unfortuantely, I was able to get many pictures because the younger two were out of hand, but she still managed to be charming for the camera.

Can a baby have too many cheerios?

Since her introduction to "real" food, i.e. cheerios, Jolie has been refusing "baby" food, i.e. rice cereals with pureed applesauce, peas, or green beans. Not that I blame her, but it has limited her diet considerably. It now consists of cheerioes, peas, and cut-up, cooked to mush green beans, and (after foraging under the table at dinner tonight) rice. Well, and whatever she finds under the table during meal times.

It is only when my babies are teething that they want a pacifier. So, No, it is not a mistake that it is upside down. This is the preferred position for chewing and biting.

Funny Moment of the Week

Okay, it may just be funny to me, but here it is:

Nyah (on the verge of going into explosion mode) declares to me: "Mom, I'm the boss"

Knowing I have only seconds to act before the bomb explodes, I decide to pretend she's making a joke and start laughing, and say: "Nyah your so funny! You in charge!! Ha Ha (fake hearty laugh in case you couldn't tell) Of course I'm the boss"

Nyah again says, but with a slight smile on her face this time: "Mom, I'm the boss"

Me laughing again, "Ha ha, Nyah you are such a joker-- I'm the boss"

Nyah, laughing too: "Mom your such a Batman-er"

Austin pipes in: "I'm a Robin-er"

Me: "Well Batman is definitely the boss"

And I am--situation difused, followed by my kids discussing who gets to be who, and who is really in charge, Batman or the Joker.

For Snow by Eleanor Farjeon

For Snow
Oh the falling Snow!
Oh the falling Snow!
Where does it all come from?
Whither does it go?
Never never laughing.
Never never weeping.
Falling in its Sleep,
Forever ever sleeping--
From what Sleep of Heaven
Does it flow, and go
Into what Sleep of Earth,
The falling falling Snow?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Initially, I didn't think much about today being a holiday. We got up, did our chores and school in record time, but then when I was making lunch I turned on the radio, and got to listen to Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. I love that speech. If you haven't had the chance to read, listen, or see this speech, visit this link:
And, although I don't like discussing politics with such a broad forum, like the internet and whoever may stumble onto my blog, I'm going to touch on it right now, so you can stop reading if you want to avoid such things yourself.
I didn't vote for Barack Obama. I'm not a fan of his position on a number of issues, I'm worried about his inexperience, and there are other issues I don't think he addressed clearly enough. I'm one of those Americans who is going into this new presidency with a little trepidation on how things will turn out. But that's not what I want to focus on today. In spite of my trepidation, I am incredibly awed by this great moment in history, and that alone has given me optimism for Barack Obama's time as President Elect.
My kids and I recently finished reading the American Girls Addy books, about a young girl in slavery who is separated from the rest of her family when she escapes with her mother, and then works to have her family reunited. In addition to reading the books we were able to discuss some of the history of slavery, as well as a little about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. Just today we read the Emancipation Proclamation together.
It is amazing to think how far our country has come. From slavery, from the civil rights movement, to tomorrow, when Barack Obama will be sworn in as President. I'm not saying our country doesn't have room for improvement, there's plenty of that, but this is a remarkable moment in history, and I, we, get to be a part of it. We get to say, "I remember when . . . " For this one day, after many years of waking up to not great moments in history (September 11th, space shuttle exploding, etc.), I hope it is a beautiful, great day.

Michael Scriptures Returns!

When we moved a few months ago I lost my index card with the scriptures my brother sent me while on his mission, but I (amazingly) found it this past week.

Mosiah 4:27

And see that all these things are done in wisdom and order; for it is not requisite that a man should run faster than he has strength. And again, it is expedient that he should be diligent, that thereby he might win the prize; therefore, all things must be done in order.

G is for Growing Up

ABSee Photo Meme: Week 2

Letter G: Growing Up

My baby, who is 8 months, old is growing up. I see evidence of this every day. One minute she is laying near me, contently playing with her toys, and the next minute she's trying to master the stairs. Or get into the cupboards, or chase the dog, or climb into the washer, or keep up with her siblings, and so on. I relish the moments when she snuggles close to nurse or fusses to tell me she wants to be picked up.

We're on a Rabbit Hunt!

Outdoor Hour Challenge #44: Mammals: Rabbits & Hares

We have had some beautiful days in the great outdoors on the hunt for rabbit tracks. We have one find that is perhaps, maybe, rabbit tracks, but other that that we just enjoyed being outside. As a side note, I have occasionally seen a rabbit in our neighborhood, but he's black and always in this one yard so I suspect he's a pet on the loose. I just need to get to know these neighbors, whoever they may be, and we can go visit. Enjoy the pictures!!
Beautiful!! (I know I say it every time,
and I'm going to keep on saying it!)
The possible rabbit tracks

We saw a bird of prey, hawk or falcon,
we couldn't get close enough to decide which,
and then we found this big nest. Beautiful view!!
Making our own tracks on the way home.

Chef Austin & Assistant

Following the lead of my friend, Katie, I helped Austin plan and prepare dinner one night this week. He wanted to make "volcano chicken" (named so because the first time I made it I used too much of the spices --chipotle pepper--and some of us couldn't handle it, oh, yeah, there were tears, but Austin loves spicy food, so now when we make it we tone it down), mexican rice, green beans, corn and salad. To be honest, it was stressful! Supervising Austin, with nursing Jolie, occuping Olivia, and Nyah whining about not getting to cook (her turn next week), and remembering to give Austin instructions so everthing would be ready about the same time was hard!! But it all worked out, and dinner was delicious!
The very best part was Austin pretending to be on a cooking show and relaying all my instructions to the studio audience!! He even told them about my baby when I had to "leave the show" to take care of Jolie. He kept reminding me I was his assistant, even though I was the one explaining to him how to do things, which he would then explain to the audience. It makes me laugh even now!
So this is something we are going to keep doing, stressful or not, just so I can be on tv again!

Colors of Winter

Earlier today I had a beautiful post written, but sometimes computers stink, so this will be short.
Winter Wednesdays: Week 1

During the week as we occasionally ventured outdoors, we spent some time looking for some colors in the white winter world.

The kids liked the gold and green on this tree.
Honestly, the kids were by far the most colorful thing I saw.
On a beautiful day the older two and I went for a hike and the view was breathtaking
Who's red dog is that? It can't be my dog having a good time in the cold outdoors!
Moss/Lichen growing on tree trunk
Green weeds grow everwhere, but kids were attracted to the lichen spots on the rock.
Its hard to see, but I like the contrasting colors of the blue sky,
dark green trees, and the gold colored tumble weeds
